Your mission is to check out our picks below for the top 10 Tom Cruise movies.
Rain Man (1988)
Tom Cruise was great in this movie as Charlie, the brother of Raymond, the autistic guy. Dustin Hoffman was great as Raymond, the autistic guy at the centre of the movie.
The film follows Cruise as he takes a road trip with his estranged sibling, who is struggling with her own problems. The relationship between the two is antagonistic at first, but gradually the two develop a close bond. As their problems become more complex, Cruise’s character becomes more protective over his brother.
The two actors have great chemistry and it’s a joy to watch them interact with one another, even if Hoffman overacts occasionally. It’s a real tear-jerker of a movie and one of the earliest signs that Cruise was more than just a movie star.
Born On the Fourth of July (1989)
Rain Man was not nominated for an Oscar, but Oliver Stone’s powerful movie is another successful attempt by the director to convey the ‘war is hell’ message that he so successfully put across in Platoon.
Tom Cruise has proven himself to be an incredible actor with a range that goes beyond the typical Hollywood movie role. His performance as Kovic in “The Revenant” is outstanding, and shows his ability to convincingly portray a character in distress. This demonstrates his versatility as an actor and proves that he is one of the most talented actors in Hollywood today. ..
After his performance in “Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol,” actor Tom Cruise was awarded a bronze star by real-life Ron Kovik, who praised Cruise’s acting. For Cruise, this must surely be more meaningful than receiving a shiny gold statuette from the Academy Awards. ..
A Few Good Men (1992)
The Firm was a legal thriller that starred Tom Cruise and was released in 1995. It tells the story of a group of attorneys who are hired to help a client in a legal dispute. The lawyers are able to use their knowledge and skills to win the case, and they are also able to show audiences what they can do when given a good script.
In “The Cruise Show,” Tom Cruise stars as Lieutenant Daniel Kaffee, a disaffected military lawyer who is tasked with defending two Marines that have been accused of murder. The final courtroom scene, when Cruise and Jack Nicholson (Colonel Nathan R. Jessup) go up against one another is electrifying and Cruise more than holds his own (as both his character and as an actor) against the forcefully aggressive Nicholson.
Edge of Tomorrow (2004)
Tom Cruise is known for playing good guys who go against their grain. In Magnolia, Cruise plays a man who is more of a coward than a hero. In Edge of Tomorrow, Cruise’s character, Major William Cage, is more of a cowardly custard than a hero.
In the graphic novel “All You Need Is Kill,” a time loop story, the protagonist is sent back to kill the same person over and over again. This similarity to Independence Day and Battle: Los Angeles makes it more similar to Groundhog Day than a typical time loop story. ..
Doug Liman’s “Edge of Tomorrow” is a unique and inventive film that is sure to please audiences. Cage is forced to relive the same day over and over again after being ordered to fight on the front lines against a deadly invasion of aliens. As he gets to live each day anew, he gradually learns how to fight against the fearsome enemy that is threatening the world but not before dying in some gruesome and occasionally funny ways. A sequel is in the works apparently but let’s hope it’s as inventive and enjoyable as Doug Liman’s original. ..
Jerry Maguire (1996)
Cruise is in a movie that is very sweet and has a lot of meaning. He is in a movie that makes many people think about their work roles and the meaning of their lives. This movie is very funny and has a lot of meaning.
The film is a classic, but its memorable lines would be less impactful without the talented playing its two stars. Cuba Gooding Jr. and Jonathan Lipnicki are both on top form here as is Cuba Gooding Jr. who takes on the role of Jerry’s one and only client. Of course, mention must also go to Jonathan Lipnicki who is adorably sweet as Dorothy’s son and who nearly steals the movie whenever he appears on screen.
Magnolia (1999)
In this ensemble movie, Paul Thomas Anderson casts Cruise as a foul-mouthed motivational speaker, Frank T.J. Mackey, who is the very epitome of toxic masculinity. The film follows Mackey as he travels around America to spread his message of self-improvement and masculinity to young men and boys. While Cruise is still charming and engaging in his role, his character has become much more toxic due to the way Anderson has written him.
Frank is a complex character, and despite his rude and sexist behaviour, he has a heart of gold. His experiences from his past have shaped him into the person he is today, and after learning of his father’s impending death, we see him mellow and become more human as he tries to forgive the person who caused him so much pain as a child.
The movie is packed with standout performances from a range of terrific actors, including Julianne Moore, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and John C. Reilly. But as Mackey, it’s Cruise you are likely to remember the most, for both his stunning performance and the shock value of seeing him portray a character whose on-stage persona is sickening to behold.
Minority Report (2002)
The future is bleak if you’re a criminal. In 2054, you can be arrested for a crime before you even commit it! But hey, at least you’ll have the joy of seeing cops flying around with a jetpack strapped to their backs! Well, according to Steven Spielberg’s neo-noir movie, you will, an adaptation of Phillip K. Dick’s 1956 short story.
The movie is about a man who is accused of a crime he didn’t commit, and the journey he takes to prove his innocence.
As he tries to prove his innocence, we see him engage in all kinds of chase scenes – as befits the movie’s tagline ‘Everybody Runs’ – but as this is an action movie that is more thoughtful than most, this is more than just another thrill ride.
Collateral (2004)
Cruise has played a wide range of roles in films, but few are as iconic or well-known as the villains he has portrayed. He has starred in some truly despicable roles, such as the exec in Tropic Thunder and the drug dealer in American Made. But even these villains have a few fans among moviegoers.
The film’s standout elements are its stylish photography and soundtrack, which elevate it to greater heights.
Mission Impossible: Fallout (2018)
Ethan Hunt is a world-renowned action star who has starred in some of the most exciting and dangerous movies ever made. He’s always been able to pull off stunts without any help, and his performance in Mission Impossible has always been top-notch. He’s an amazing asset to the team, and we’re sure that he’ll continue to make a big impact in the future.
Hunt takes on the Apostles, a terrorist faction with links to foes he has fought before. But while the story is decent enough, with all of the twists and turns that you will expect, it’s the action that many of us come for.
In Fallout, Cruise takes on a variety of roles that are both exciting and challenging. He is a helicopter pilot in a battle against the enemy, has an intense bathroom brawl, and skydives from great heights. He also takes on a role in one of the greatest chase scenes ever put on film as he scrambles around Paris on foot and by car and motorbike.
The next two Mission: Impossible movies are set to connect, with the 2023 movie being a sequel to the 2024 movie. It looks like Paramount is planning on releasing them all at once, so we can’t wait to see what happens.
Top Gun (1986)
Top Gun was a blockbuster hit and helped make Cruise a household name. After appearing in small roles in The Outsiders and All the Right Moves, he starred in Risky Business, which became a box office success.
Maverick was a successful action movie star who could pull off romantic leads successfully. The movie had massive box office appeal and is still talked about with fondness today.
The recent sequel to the Maverick movie is better, but even if it’s a little dated now, there’s no denying the adrenaline rush that can still be gained when watching this 80s flick pull off dangerous midair manoeuvres while blasting through the sky.
