Mike Flanagan is quickly becoming the new king of horror, with his novels possessing a level of suspense and terror that Stephen King simply cannot match. While King’s later work may lack the same edge as his earlier work, Flanagan’s novels are sure to keep readers on the edge of their seats. ..
However, some people were not as impressed with the season. They argued that it was too slow and lacked the jump scares that make horror so popular. While I can see where they’re coming from, I think Hill House is still a great season of horror. ..
Since then, Flanagan’s projects have been a bit more hit or miss, with both Bly Manor and Midnight Mass divisively splitting audiences and critics alike between those who love and those who dislike-but-don’t-quite-loathe the projects.
Both of these stories had strong themes, but the Mass story was more focused on religion and the love story was more focused on love and religion. The Mass story was a bit more scary, while the love story wasn’t as scary. I thought both stories were well done, but I thought the Mass story was better because it had a stronger focus.
The Midnight Club is a strange mix of different influences, some of which work well and others not so much. The promise of no monologues and a return to the heart of Flanagan’s horror make this a unique read.
The story follows a group of kids as they go about their everyday lives, but as they near the end of their summer vacation, something strange and mysterious begins to happen at Brightcliffe. The kids start having dreams in which they are told about their own death, and soon enough, they realize that the stories around Brightcliffe are not just stories - they are true. As the kids get closer to the truth, they come into contact with people who have also died at the hospice, and all of them seem to have something in common: They were never told about their own death. The mystery at Brightcliffe is finally solved, and the kids learn that facing one’s mortality is not as bad as they thought it would be.
Ilonka is a young woman who learns of a terminal diagnosis. She does some research online and discovers a hospice that caters exclusively to terminally ill young adults. She decides to stay at the hospice with a number of other kids. ..
The first episode does a great job of setting the scene and easing you into the horror. Although horror may be doing a lot of heavy lifting, there’s very little in the way of scares here.
In an effort to make his work more suspenseful, Flanagan often uses jump scares in his episodes. This makes the episodes difficult to watch and makes it difficult to follow the story.
The first episode of the show features a gimmick that is quickly revealed to be a cheap way to get people to watch the show. The 10 episodes follow a variety of characters and events that allude to death and mortality. However, despite the subject matter being interesting, the lack of exploration into horror makes this an interesting show that could have been more interesting.
Despite the good set-up, the actual story here is not well told. The show does not adequately develop some of the characters, and at its worst, fails to characterization some of the kids. This could have been a stronger story if it had better developed its characters and paid more attention to their motivations.
The popularity of horror stories at night is nothing new. After all, the show “Are You Afraid Of The Dark?” was popular in the 1990s. However, recent events have made clowns a popular choice for horror stories. Step aside Pennywise, clowns are where it’s at! ..
The Midnight Club is a show about three kids. The focus on these three kids takes away some of the intrigue with the others.
The show’s main problem is that it fails to develop its characters enough. While Spence grapples with a secret that has torn his family apart, Cheri has a strange past but it’s never explored. Meanwhile, Natsuki feels the weight of loss with her mother but again, it’s not really given the time to be explored. ..
Despite its flaws, “The Death Cure” does have some redeeming qualities. It is clearly tailored for a young adult audience and there are some nice little twists late on, alongside an overarching theme about death and facing one’s mortality which is beautifully explored. It is certainly worth a watch and it is creative enough to stick with until the end. ..
