Fallen Flower 1

The opening sequence of Tomorrow begins with a tense and ominous scene. A group of people are discussing how to commit suicide, and eventually decide on locking themselves inside a car. Ultimately this will lead to their deaths, but that’s not going to happen today. Not even close.

Dressed in a lavish red suit, Gu Ryeon arrives. She hurriedly drives them back into town and hangs them precariously off the edge of a broken bridge. Faced with a very different sort of suicide, all four agree that they want to survive. As they all plead, Gu Ryeon saves them (in an unconventional way at least!) and walks away. ..

Joon-Woong, a recent college graduate, is struggling to find a job. He’s seen the homeless man on the bridge and decides to help him. Joon-Woong is kind and gentle, and the man thanks him before jumping into the water. Joon-Woong watches as the man floats away and feels grateful for his kindness.

In a matter of seconds, Gu Ryeon had jumped in and pulled Jun-Woong off the man, punching him across the bridge and goading him to jump. When Jun-Woong gets involved and questions their motives, the man jumped over the bridge anyway.

Jun-Woong wakes up in the hospital after seeming to die. He finds out that he was only in a coma and his spirit has actually been alive the whole time. Gu-Ryeon, a death angel, explains to him that this is their world and he’s part of Jumadeung, a crisis management team for grim reapers. ..

Jun-Woong, the homeless man who was saved from the bridge incident, is in a coma. However, his fate hangs in the balance. The King of Heaven wants to see him.

Jun-Woong is tumbling headfirst down a rabbit hole, traveling ever-deeper into this afterlife world he’s stumbled upon. He’s eventually brought to the absolutely beautiful Jumadeung, where Gu-Ryeon drops him off and hopes they never meet each other again.

Jun-Woong, a new angel who has just arrived in the city, is quickly becoming a sensation. She is beautiful and kind-hearted, and everyone seems to be drawn to her. But when she suddenly changes into a white gown, Jun-Woong realizes that she is something much more than just another angel. She is the King of Heaven’s daughter!

Jun-Woong has a choice to make: He can either lie in a coma for three years and hope for the best, or he can agree to work with the death angels and be back in his body in six months. When Jun-Woong initially refuses, a quick stint in his body, unable to move from this hell, is enough for him to change his mind. ..

The group of people in the afterlife are having a hard time agreeing on whether suicide is the worst thing a human can commit.

The King interrupts them to say how high their suicide rate is and how they need to try and stop the RM (Risk Management) team from failing again.

Knowing that Jun-Woong is going to be a part of the team, Gu-Ryeon heads out to find him. She finds out that he is actually going to be working with them now, which is a win/win situation.

As we soon learn, Gu-Ryeon and the team’s job is actually to serve as Grim Reapers that help people. They only save people who are about to give up on their lives, rather than those who are already dead. So together they head in to see Eun-Bi and Hye-Won, two girls who seem to have a connection together.

It’s hidden from view though, prompting Gu-Ryeon to use a memory key to unlock what may be hidden.

Eun-Bi, a young girl, is bullied by her classmates for being different. One day, she has a strange dream in which she unlocks a series of memories from another person’s life. These memories show that Eun-Bi was bullied too, and that the people who left messages on the blackboard were doing so out of malice. The dream world begins to fall apart as Eun-Bi and Jun-Woong are on a train carriage about to meet an untimely demise. ..

The Episode Review

Tomorrow starts off with a pretty impressive start, with dizzying cinematography, a nice tone and a simple but effective bit of worldbuilding. There are touches of Rugal, The Uncanny Counter, Devil Punisher and checks notes The Good Place.

This cocktail has a lot of different ideas in it, which creates something exciting and with a good foundation to build upon for the future.

The comedy is good and fresh off his role on The King’s Affection, Ro Woon jumps into this sci-fi action thriller and absolutely runs with it.

The opening of this show is well-done and provides exposition for the audience. However, it’s also clear that the show is going to keep going for a while, with a cliffhanger at the end.

I do question the inclusion of that epilogue though, which doesn’t add very much substance beyond seeing Gu-Ryeon being scammed, but it works well to alleviate some of the tension I guess, so there is that!

Tomorrow is a promising K-drama from MBC. It will be interesting to see how it plays out over the weeks. ..
