The Time
Sheriff Joy is investigating a robbery in a local corner store. After breaking the robber’s arm and hauling him in the back of her car, she begins ranting about the real problems in town. Specifically how people have been going missing. This foreshadowing of what could be to come in this sci-fi series makes for an interesting plot point.
Joy is in a tough spot. She’s been in competition with Trudy for the position of mayor since they were both elected to their respective positions four years ago. Now, with Trevor missing and no sign of him, Joy has to decide how much she’ll tell Trudy about what happened that night. Meanwhile, the Tillerson boys are growing increasingly worried about their brother and are starting to think he may have been taken against his will. ..
Wayne has decided that he wants the land and is willing to pay $1 million to get it. He’s not sure if he knows about the hole, but it seems like he’s doing everything possible to get it.
Billy is on his way to the ranch when he’s picked up by Amy. She’s uncomfortable with him starting to sing again on the way back, but he’s actually quite funny.
Autumn, a strange character in the group, picked up her prescription last episode. She has been drawing the insignia found on the cliff-face for some time. ..
Rhett is questioned by Joy about the belt buckle he found at the scene of the crime. He admits to having no idea how it got there, and is suspicious of Joy’s questions.
Joy finally speaks to him later on at the station, promising that whatever happened is going to come out. “It always does.” She says.
Rhett tells the story of how he and Trevor had a fight outside the bar that night. He insists that it was just a fight and that he didn’t do anything wrong. However, Joy is not convinced. She is suspicious over Rhett’s story and wonders if he is lying to get away with something.
After driving Rhett home, Royal finally arrives to pick him up. He drives Rhett home while also showing off the belt buckle that he’s pinched from lock-up. Interestingly, Royal drops the belt buckle in the hole later that evening. On reflection, Royal decides to start over with Autumn, wiping the slate clean with her.
Autumn tells the king that she had an accident as a child and that she woke up in a hospital in Jackson. She says that she pushed her father into a hole to see what would happen.
After probing him over what he experienced in the hole, Royal admits that he caught a glimpse of the future. Autumn is shocked but the pair shake on them keeping it all a secret between them. Interestingly, when they shake hands, Autumn’s stone necklace seems to change – as does the cliff-face behind her. It fades out of view and back again – something that Sherriff Joy and numerous other people notice. The latter sees townsfolk phone in to the station about.
Amy heads to the woods to find her brother’s body. She finds him lying on the grass, and she quickly returns to the house to warn the family. Royal in turn reveals that Trevor has been found.
The Episode Review
I was really looking forward to this episode, as Outer Range is one of my favorite shows. However, the pace of the episode was really slow and didn’t feel like it was moving forward at all. It felt like it took a lot of time to get to the point where we were supposed to be.
The first 30 minutes of this episode were a bit strange because the tone and tempo were set in the first two episodes.
The final 15 minutes of “Stranger Things” are absolutely bizarre and gripping. From the mountain disappearing to Trevor’s body being found in the woods, there’s no end to the weirdness this show is conjuring – and I am all for it!
