The documentary is narrated by actor and Everest survivor, Everest climber and filmmaker, Rob Hall. It tells the story of the people who were affected by the Nepal Earthquake, from those who lost their homes to those who were left homeless and traumatized. The film also features interviews with survivors, emergency responders and experts on the earthquake.
The second episode focuses on the people of Kathmandu, as they try to rebuild their lives after the quake. Whilst there are still some challenges to face, such as the lack of food and water, many people are starting to feel a sense of hope and relief. They tell their stories of how they have coped with the aftermath of the quake, from finding new homes to rebuilding their businesses. The final episode looks at how people are coping in Pokhara, where the earthquake has had a much more direct impact. There is still a lot of pain and suffering going on, but many people are starting to get back on their feet. As the survivors of the Langtang Valley struggle to survive in a tense and dangerous situation, they come into contact with the locals, who are eager to exploit them for their own gain. The Survivors must use all of their skills and resources to stay alive and avoid any potential disaster, while also trying to keep the locals at bay.
An animated map flies between different areas, showcasing the distance and area these people are spread out across. It’s a neat way of extrapolating how devastating this earthquake actually was, whilst simultaneously bringing in as many different perspectives and takes on what happened as possible. ..
The show splits its time between raw footage, photos snapped by different survivors, and intermingled talking head interviews that allow us to get into the mindset of these men and women.
The music in Aftershock is powerful and well-done. It’s something that will fly under the radar for a lot of people who talk about the show, but it’s an absolutely devastating moment in episode 2 that sees the music work perfectly. The crescendo until it’s the same volume as his voice gives gravity to the situation and the awful losses many experienced during this time.
The documentary is well-made and provides a unique perspective on the earthquake. However, one could argue that the first episode could have been longer to show more raw footage from the earthquake, potentially with news reports to heighten the tension.
Netflix knows how to produce excellent documentaries. Aftershock: Everest and the Nepal Earthquake is no exception. This is another shocking nature documentary, and an absolute must-watch.
