At the climax of the movie, it is seemingly confirmed that Lou has been killed. However, closer inspection reveals that she may still be alive at the end of the movie. Let’s take a look at why this could be the case. ..
Who is Lou?
In the letter, Lou reveals that she has been having financial problems for some time and that she is in danger of losing her home and all of her money. She asks her neighbour to help her out and to keep an eye on things so that she can get back on her feet. In the end, Lou thanks Hannah for her help and leaves the letter with a rifle to her chin, warning that she will come back if things get too tough.
Just before Lou kills herself, she is visited by Hannah. Hannah tells Lou that she has been watching her and that she wants to help her.
Hannah’s husband Phillip is presumed dead after he was reported missing by the island community. However, he turns up on the island and kills Hannah’s boyfriend, and abducts Vee.
Hannah calls Lou’s cabin and asks for help, presumably because she knows Lou has hunting skills.
Lou agrees to help the police find her sister, Vee, after being distracted from her suicide attempt. As the story goes on, we learn why Lou is so good at hunting and we discover her secretive past. ..
What is Lou’s real identity?
Lou had been a CIA agent before moving to the island.
The account of how Lou and Hannah discovered the cabin with the two men who work for Phillip is unique to this story. It’s the reason why they are so agile in combat too.
When Lou arrives at the cabin, she pretends to be a frail old woman looking for help. When they start to realise she isn’t quite as fragile as she appears to be, Lou takes them both down and extracts information from one of them about Phillip.
Lou is a former CIA agent who has a connection to Hannah’s toxic husband. ..
What is Lou’s connection to Phillip?
In her CIA years, Lou went undercover in Iran to get close to a high-profile target. During her mission, she had a son to the target and kept the boy to maintain her cover. The identity of this boy? Phillip!
As her mission in Iran progressed, Phillip was taken from her by the people she was investigating. They did this because they suspected Lou was a spy. To keep her cover, Lou didn’t reach out to save Phillip but the CIA intervened and rescued him themselves.
Phillip joined the US Army Special Forces before marrying Hannah and having a child with her.
Phillip’s whereabouts were tracked by Lou and in the process, he discovered that he was a war criminal and an abusive husband to Hannah.
The story of Lou and Hannah’s move to the Orcas Islands so that Hannah could be away from Phillip and Vee is a heartwarming tale of love and sacrifice. Lou maneuvered this move so that Hannah could be free from Phillip’s grasp, and he then moved close to her in order to keep her safe. This story is a testament to the power of love, and it is an example of how sacrifice can lead to success.
Phillip ‘died’ after his apartment blew up several years later as a result of the war crimes he had committed. It is presumed that he was murdered by the authorities as a result. ..
After hearing about her son’s death, Lou assumed Hannah was now safe. It’s because of this that Lou thought her days of protecting Hannah were now over and believing that her job was done, Lou decided to kill herself.
Lou realised that her mission was far from over when she heard that Phillip had returned. ..
Does Lou rescue Vee?
Phillip took Vee to a lighthouse and rigged it with explosives in order to kill his mother and Hannah. This was likely Phillip’s plan all along, as he knew they would come looking for him and that this would be the end result. ..
The CIA is after both Phillip and Lou, as well as any other individuals who may have knowledge about the events that took place in Iran.
Phillip and Lou arrive at the lighthouse, where they have a confrontation. Phillip’s plan is foiled, however, as Lou manages to defuse the bomb.
Hannah and Vee escape into the forest to safety while Lou takes on Phillip to stop him from pursuing them. Mother and son fight it out in the ocean as the CIA arrive overhead in a helicopter. The fight between Phillip and Lou slows down and after he breaks down in tears, Lou apologizes to him for not being a better mother.
The tearful reunion between the CIA and their target ends when the CIA opens fire on them both, presumably killing them. ..
Is Lou really dead?
A body was seen falling into the sea after a reported shooting in an area known for drug trafficking. It is presumed that the victim has been killed. ..
Later, Hannah finds a letter from Lou and discovers that she has inherited Lou’s house and money. When government officials arrive to speak to her about Lou, Hannah tells them she knows nothing about Lou’s whereabouts or her past. This is a lie as Hannah discovered Lou’s identity earlier but we can assume that she wanted to ensure the safety of herself and Vee.
We see Hannah and Vee on a ferry heading to a new life in Seattle. The camera then pulls back onto a woman spying on them both with a set of binoculars. Lou is watching over her daughter-in-law and granddaughter. As such, she isn’t dead after all!
What is the significance of this final scene?
Hannah and Vee are watching over Lou because he is still alive and they are worried that the CIA thinks he has incriminating documents about Iran.
We don’t know. Phillip is likely dead, so it’s possible Lou is watching over them both in case the CIA ever tries to take them. Or it could just be that Lou wants to stay close to Hannah and Vee in case they get into trouble of a different kind. ..
