Why does Auden want to spend the summer in Colby?
Auden is a socially awkward teen who always seems to say and do the wrong thing. She wants to fit in with her peers, but always ends up doing things that make her stand out.
She decides to move to a new town, where she can be herself and make new friends.
Despite her mom’s wishes, she packs up her things and heads to Colby to work in her stepmom’s boutique.
Auden’s first attempt to change who she is backfires. She goes to a teen hangout spot at the beach, The Tip, and makes out with a guy named Jake. However, she quickly breaks away when she realizes this isn’t who she is or what she wants to be doing.
How do Auden’s dad and stepmom react to her stay?
Heidi tells Auden that her father is “a bit more distant” this summer. Robert has been working on his second book and Heidi says he is “a bit more distant” because he is not as involved in their family life as he used to be.

Auden asks Eli, the young man, if he’s going to parties anymore. He says he doesn’t go to them anymore because he’s not interested in people. Auden tries to push him outside his comfort zone, but he lash out in anger. When Eli realizes she knows about Abe, he accuses her of offering him pity friendship.
When Eli unexpectedly shows up to the party after all, everyone stops and stares at him in shock. Auden saves the awkward situation, however, by serving Eli the penalty for lateness: a food fight.
Eli and Auden kiss later that night while everyone else is partying in the ocean.
