The new Marquis is a widower with two children. He has been married once and Violet has never seen him since he divorced her. Violet is upset that her mother won’t give up the villa, but Lady Grantham is adamant. The family gathers in France to discuss the will and Violet finds out that her father had left her a fortune in France. She is overjoyed and decides to keep the villa.

As the new era begins, Lady Mary and her staff must come to terms with the changes that have come about in their lives since Mr. Carson’s death. Jack arrives with actors Guy Dexter and Myrna Dalgleish to direct his new silent film, The Gambler, right there at Downton. While Jack’s interest in Mary tests her faithfulness to her absent husband, the film’s production experiences several challenges of its own.

The film’s two plotlines are not compelling because they do not follow natural ends. The French way of doing things is superior to the American way, and it is appropriate to proudly display derogatory comments about cultural differences.

Downton Abbey: A New Era is a successful continuation of the English period drama that has been enjoyed by fans for years. But the hope for this new era is that its storylines and social commentary will be ground-breaking. The show has long fulfilled its place in fans’ hearts as a diverting comfort watch, providing an inside look into the more glamorous challenges of the upper class and the drama among the people who serve them–all within a context of contained, quickly-resolved conflict. Fellowes not only seamlessly captures beloved qualities of the franchise; he even makes improvements by tying up loose threads and correcting the series’ old mistakes (i.e. its formerly repeated mistreatment of show’s only gay character).

The new Downton Abbey film is a forgettable affair that doesn’t do much to change the status quo.

The movie is idyllic, charming, and fun–in short, nearly everything fans could have hoped for. However, a previous affinity for the TV characters and melodramatic plotlines is almost certainly required for that to be the case.

The final season of Downton Abbey is coming to an end, and fans are wondering what will happen next. The show has been on the air for six seasons, and it’s been a long time since we’ve seen the Crawley family.
