The Aristocats
The Aristocats is a delightful story of love, loss and the power of friendship. The music is catchy and the story is easy to follow, making it a perfect choice for children of all ages.
Adelaide, a retired opera star, lives the good life in her Paris villa with her classy cat Duchess and her three kittens. When Adelaide’s butler overhears that she’s leaving everything she owns to the cats, he kidnaps the cats and takes off. ..
Thomas O’Malley takes care of the cats for a while, but eventually they must fend for themselves. Thomas is crafty and helpful, but he can’t keep them all safe. They have an amazing adventure that will stay with them forever.
Released in 1970, The Aristocats is one of those titles seemingly destined to remain in the shadows next to Lady and The Tramp but this cat-centric tale is every bit as enjoyable as that movie. This classic tells the story of a group of aristocratic felines who run away from their home in France to live among the commoners in America. Along the way, they make new friends and foil a plot by their evil cousin, Gaston, to take over Paris. ..
The Fox and the Hound
When Copper is drafted into the military, Tod must find a way to keep their bond strong while he’s away. With the help of a new friend, Tod begins to realize that the only way to keep Copper safe is to let him go and find his own path in life. ..
The Fox and the Hound is an impressive film because it uses juxtapositions between the fates of these two animals to create a compelling story. The friendship between these two characters is a central point of the plot, and it remains strong throughout. ..
The film follows the story of two friends, Tod and Copper, as they go through their ups and downs in life. They are mean to each other, but they are also the best of friends. Despite their differences, they always manage to make it through whatever life throws their way. This friendship is something that really helps the film stand out.
Bolt
Bolt is an entertaining animated film that is enjoyed by both children and adults. When Bolt is separated from his co-star, he embarks on a journey to find him. Along the way, Bolt learns some important life lessons. ..
Disney has taken a tried and tested formula and revamped it into CGI format in a way that doesn’t lose the integrity of what this sort of story does so well.
The cast is great and the movie has some surprisingly decent 3D effects that held up well in the cinema at the time.
Homeward Bound
The Incredible Journey was a classic film that captured the heart of many people. The remake, Homeward Bound, is a story of two dogs and a cat who find themselves separated from their owners. They embark on an epic quest across the Sierra Nevada mountains to find their owner.
As they journey across dangerous terrain, the trio begins to form a closer bond. Together, they face challenges and come to understand each other more.
The film’s narrative is simple, but the evolving bond between the three animals is partly why the movie works as well as it does. Homeward Bound is a classic family picture that stands the test of time, helped by some great voice acting along the way. ..
Oliver and Company
Oliver and Company is a charming little animation that is essentially the cat and dog version of Oliver’s Twist. The characters are unique and interesting while the little lost kitten Oliver stands out next to this dog-centric tale of petty crime in New York City.
This classic children’s story is set in a small town in the UK and tells the story of a group of animals who must find a way to get out of town before the day is over. Along the way they must outwit angry humans, dodge traps and solve puzzles.
The movie “The Cat in the Hat” is one of those movies that everyone remembers, but few people actually appreciate. ..
This film captures the essence of what animated films do so well and weaves it into a contemporary take on an age-old classic.
Lassie Come Home
This dog movie is a classic that people will instantly recognize when they see the title. Released in 1943, it tells the story of a dog who comes home from war and is welcomed by her family.
In this novel, the Carraclough family is forced to sell their dog to a rich Duke of Rudling. Lassie is unable to deal with this and sets out on a long and dangerous journey to rejoin her old family.
This is a story of loyalty and bravery, told through the eyes of a dog who has always been there for his friend. It’s a classic dog movie that will leave you feeling emotional, just like the dog himself.
Balto
Balto is one of the better dog movies, but it’s also one that’s often overlooked. Boasting beautiful hand-drawn animation (away from the jarring live-action opening and closing scenes), this is a really sweet movie with a pretty poignant tone.
Balto is a half-wolf/half-husky who is given the chance to become a hero when an outbreak of diphtheria threatens the children of Nome, Alaska. He is determined to help out and protect his fellow humans, even if it means sacrificing his own safety.
In 1925, a team of dogs set out on a 600-mile journey to get medical supplies in the middle of winter. The dogs were successful in completing the journey, but one dog was lost and never found again. This story is about that dog, Balto, and his team of companions who went on the journey to find him.
Based on a true story, Balto’s story delivers an emotional adventure that really pulls on the emotions. This is a great film and definitely worth checking out.
101 Dalmatians (1996)
1996 saw the release of 101 Dalmatians, a campy and cheesy remake of a classic Disney movie. It’s not a particularly outstanding film, but it is an enjoyable family feature. ..
The story follows the lives of Roger and Anita as they try to make a living as computer game designers and fashion designers, respectively. Their dogs Perdita and Pongo don’t talk but do act out all their scenes well.
When Cruella inevitably shows up, Pongo and Perdita end up saving the day and bringing back their puppies. With lots of slapstick humour, plenty of Home Alone-esque pranks and a pacey screenplay, this live-action remake is great fun.
Beethoven
This comedy is about a man who falls in love with a woman who is also in love with Beethoven, but they can’t seem to get along. They have some hilarious moments together, but ultimately they just can’t seem to make it work. Beethoven is the star of this show, but the supporting human characters are actually pretty good and there’s some famous faces in here as well.
The Newton family’s life is comfortable but they feel like something is missing. That missing component is a small puppy named Beethoven. He eventually grows into a giant St Bernard, but also becomes the target of a nasty veterinarian who’s hell-bent on making Beethoven the target of an animal experiment. ..
The script is weak at times but the overall tone and pace are not.
Benji (1974)
Benji is a movie that is full of heart and can be enjoyed by the whole family. It’s a movie that has a lot of laughs and can be enjoyed by adults and children alike.
Benji is a homeless man who stops by townsfolk to give them food and attention. He is a central character in this story, and his story is told in the first person.
Benji is a friendly dog who loves spending time with children, even though their parents may not want them to. When two children are kidnapped, Benji sets out to find them and save the day. ..
Heartwarming and packed with a great message, Benji is another great movie to check out. ..
